Jeju, South Korea — Indonesian trade unions marked an important presence at the international level as Yudha Edwin Noya, Chairman of the CEMWU Indonesia Local Union from PT Freeport Indonesia, actively participated in the IndustriAll Global Union’s Asia Pacific Electric Power Union Network Meeting held on 27–29 January 2026 in Jeju.
The forum, organized by IndustriAll Global Union, brought together trade union representatives from the energy and electric power sectors across the Asia-Pacific region, including Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, and Taiwan. The meeting served as a strategic platform to exchange experiences, strengthen cross-border solidarity, and address key challenges related to energy transition and workers’ rights.
On this occasion, Yudha Edwin Noya, representing CEMWU Indonesia, delivered a presentation entitled “The Role of Indonesian Trade Unions in Realizing a Just Transition and Preventing Job Losses.” The presentation highlighted the critical role of trade unions in ensuring that the energy transition process is fair, inclusive, and does not result in layoffs or the erosion of workers’ rights.
One of the key topics presented was the implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) at PT Freeport Indonesia. Yudha explained that the company is taking significant steps toward green mining by transitioning from a coal-fired power plant (CFPP) to a Liquefied Natural Gas Power Plant (LNG-PP). This transition is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 40 percent.
Furthermore, the LNG Power Plant project is scheduled to begin operations in 2027, with a planned capacity of up to 265 megawatts, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable energy development and emissions reduction.
The forum was also attended by IndustriAll representatives at regional and global levels, including Certeza Ramon from IndustriAll South East Asia, Bhaytacharya Ashutosh from IndustriAll South Asia, as well as Geneva-based representatives Curiel and Diana Junquera, who joined the meeting online.
“Energy transition must go hand in hand with the principles of a Just Transition, where workers are protected, involved, and become part of the solution, not the victims of change,” Yudha stated during the forum.
CEMWU Indonesia’s participation in this international meeting underscores the commitment of Indonesian trade unions to actively engage at the global level and to advocate for a fair, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition that safeguards decent work for all.
